Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Every year, the PTO at my school hosts a pumpkin decorating contest.  My first two years, I threw something together last minute.  My fourth year, my pumpkin exploded before I had the opportunity to finish decorating it.   I was automatically OUT of the contest.  And my classroom smelled like pumpkin guts for days {it was BAD}.

But my third year... my third year, I ROCKED it.  I gave it my all, and I WON!!
Check it out:
Amazing, right?!  Haha I'm not too proud of it or anything ;)

After I spray painted the pumpkin yellow and let it dry, I spent three hours painting Spongebob's features.  {I really meant business that year.}  Then I painted an empty Scholastic box blue and peach, for the ocean and the sand.  I painted popsicle sticks blue and glued pics {that I printed and colored} of Spongebob's friends to the sticks.  Last, I drew some seaweed and attached it to the sides of the box.

It wasn't easy, but when we heard our name over the loudspeaker, my class went WILD, and it was so worth it!  We won a class pizza party :)

This week, we are getting our pumpkins to decorate.  I'm still up in the air about what I should make!  I've seen some great ideas while perusing the Internet... but I'm not in love with anything yet!  If you have any ideas, I'd LOVE to hear them!!

Aren't you obligated to decorate your pumpkin like a cupcake?!

Your Spongebob looks great. I consider myself semi-artistic, but that doesn't extend to pumpkin painting. Your have quite a talent!

Good luck this year!

How cute is Spongebob? I'm also curious about how your pumpkin exploded! You need to share :)

Way cute! How did your pumpkin explode?! One of my students decorated his pumpkin just like the moose in the book "Moostache." They drilled holes in the front for his mustache and had tons of yarn making the mustache!

Sad that you couldn't enter your exploded pumpkin as a natural disaster! (How does a pumpkin explode anyway?)
I agree about choosing a cupcake. Or for something more Halloween centered, what about Frankenstein.

We did Wilber from charlotte's web one year. I cut strips of pink paper and we did paper mache to cover. We laid down hay (made from construction paper) on the top of an overhead cart and built a pen around it. We had a web that said classy pig. I will admit that it was the fastest paper mache job ever. The first try we painted and it all peeled off over night but he was pretty cute!

What a fun competition between your colleagues - I wish we did something similar; instead, we are decorating our car trunks this year at our PTSO Trunk or Treat event where students "trick or treat" in the staff parking lot!

I vote for a zebra print or cupcake pumpkin. :)

Your Sponge Bob is adorable!

My class made a pumpkin turkey one year. You get a beak for the front of the pumpkin. I think we found it at either Oriental Trading or Party City.

Then, you take wire coat hangers and bend them to stick into the back of the turkey. You take old men's ties and spray them with something that will stiffen them and then attach them to the coat hangers.

I wish I had a picture of it! I won the Most Creative award that year.

Good luck and post a picture once you're done :)
