Clip It! Behavior Chart

My little firsties officially have the dreaded spring fever!  I knew pretty much when we returned from break that we needed a change, something new and fun to keep everyone motivated.
I am usually a card flipper, but I decided that it focused too much on negative behavior, and not enough on good behavior.  I've always wanted to give the clip chart a try, but I was afraid I wouldn't be able to keep up with it.  After talking with my Facebook friends and doing a little research, I realized I could do it!  Take a look at my new chart:
It's done in bright chevron... my favorite!  This chart has seven levels.  Everyone starts on Ready to Learn, and kiddos can move up and down the chart all day long.  Super Student is the TOP of the chart, and Parent Contact is the very bottom {we don't want to go there}!

I really want to encourage my kiddos to get to the top of the chart, so whenever students reach the Super Student level, they will earn a jewel on their clip.  When five jewels are earned, clips will be "retired" to the Hall of Fame.  A new clip will be issued, and the fun starts all over again!
I am always on my best behavior! ;)
I got the idea to frame the Hall of Fame from First Grade Glitter and Giggles!

And for even MORE motivation... I am awarding tickets to those students who end the day on green, or somewhere UP the chart.
Here's my ticket scale:  green = 1; blue = 2; purple = 3; pink = 4.  On Fridays, we will count up our tickets and visit my prize bins & binders to "buy" some goodies!

My babes will keep their earned tickets in these neat little pouches:
I went to Staples to buy something else and stumbled upon these on clearance... perfect!  AND they're in my classroom colors!  To ensure that the pouches stay clean and in one piece, I am keeping them in bins {sorted by table... six tables = six bins}.
I still have to add student numbers to the pouches, but other than that, my new behavior plan is complete!  Of course, I had to share, and I turned my clip chart into a little pack for you!  It includes the posters to make the chart, the Hall of Fame poster, a note home to parents explaining the system, and clip chart minis that you can send home!
Check it out in my TpT shop!  Have a great night!!

I love using a clip chart. It helps so much! I also do the jewels but don't do the Hall of Fame. I LOVE that idea! I'm going to have to take that one :) I've been thinking of using an economy system but didn't know where to start. You just gave me some great ideas!

I use this behavior chart (although not quite as fancy... just plain rainbow colors) all year and love it! Like how it rewards the good behavior while taking care of the negative. Love you idea with jewels... that might add some extra pizzazz for the rest of the year. thanks for sharing!

Spring fever has hit my room (and all of first grade) too! Yikes! 31 days to go. I love the idea for the wall of fame with the clothespins and jewel stickers. I don't use a clip chart, but do have a wall of stars. The stars move as needed based on behavior. 1st move= warning, 2nd move= loss of some playtime (10 min). I think a wall of fame to reward those who don't move in a week would be a nice motivator.

I use a clip chart and I love it! I also move to the clip chart hall of fame after they have 5 gems. I don't have the ticket system, but I like that idea! What kind of things can they buy? (and I'm totally going to go looking for those pouches!)

I implemented the flipchart too this year! I LOVE it. I do the jewels as well and after they get 10 they get a new color clip. What I don't do is your tickets! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this idea!!!! I am totally going to start that! :) Thanks!

First off, I LOVE the chevron! Second, thanks for making this free!

I use a clip chart in my room but absolutely love the "jewel" twist you put on it. What a great addition for the positive side of it. Definitely implementing next year.

I have done the clip chart/jewel behavior thingy too but love the addition of the Hall of Fame. So clever! Do you use the peel off adhesive jewels or do you have them glue the jewel on? My biggest problem was gluing those jewels on every day! UGH!

I love the Hall of Fame idea! Thanks so much for sharing that. I use a clip chart and it has been working really well, but I want to up the ante for next year since I'll be looping.

I love your clip chart! super cute! I also use a clip chart and have given fake money, similar to you using the tickets. I've always had trouble trying to find the time to give them their earned money for the day. When do you give out your tickets? Do you give them out at the end of every day or have the kids tally up their tickets on their behavior calendar then give it out on Friday? Thanks so much!

LOVE your Hall of fame chart and your tickets. Are your tickets available on TPT? I looked , but couldn't find them. Doesn't the Hall of Fame ribbon fill up really fast? Do you send some of the clips home from the Hall of Fame chart, after they've been up for awhile? Getting ready for the new year and would love to implement your ideas. I used the clip chart last year, but never though of tickets or the Hall of Fame. Thanks for sharing such great ideas!

I love this idea in how it also rewards the good behavior. I have a preschool class and am wondering how you would suggest tweaking this for students who cannot recognize their name in written form yet.

J.S. Kelly said...

Love this!! I teach 2/3 yr old preschool and have been dying for a good behavior chart that also rewarded good behavior not just recognized the bad. Mine can't completely recognize their names just yet, so I am going to put a little cutout of a picture of them onto their clip so they understand it a little better.

I love this chart and use it in my classroom. My one question is about prizes. What types of prizes do you have? How many tickets does it take to purchase them?
